Key West aka the
Conch Republic (pronounced
konk) is the last Florida key linked via the overland highway. The
island measures two miles by four miles and has a population of
approximately 27,000. The Conch Republic was established on April
23, 1982, when the Florida Keys seceded from the United States of
America in response to a US Border Patrol blockade set up on highway US
1 at Florida City just to the north of the Florida Keys. After
seceding, the Conch Republic promptly surrendered and demanded Foreign
Aid, giving birth to its motto "The People Who Seceded Where Others
